For many years now, I have also stated that I would like for more homilies to teach the congregation more in-depth about the background of the Bible readings used in the readings for that particular Mass, and also to expand on the lesson to be gained from those Bible readings.

After suffering years over the confusion within our Church and lack of knowledge about the Faith I am overwhelmed with excitement about the possibility of going back to basics and having the priests involved. I attempted to have our Parish use the Catechism as the principal book on instructing those going through RCIA. The program was so lame. They would even give an introduction class on how to use the Catechism to the RCIA class. How can a new enquirer maintain their interest in the faith if they don't even know how to use the catechism? When approached by non-Catholics with questions how can they answer correctly? Gee! even the priests might learn their faith once again.
My greatest fear was that once again jingoism was being used to ignite a fire within the whole Church with the phase " Go Evangelize". You can't begin to light a fire if there is no fuel. The Catechism united to Scripture is that fuel. Once those in the pew AND the priest are subjected to this strategy there will be "ah-ha!" moments that will ignite the soul to "know, love and serve" God.
If I may help you in anyway please let me know.

Many Catholics I know, have fallen away from the Church precisely because they don't know anything about it. Please start teaching. Once I learn, I will teach others.
Most classes are attended by the same few people, and no one outside of them really learns anything. I believe a good place to start educating the laity is during the Homily at Mass. At least there, there are certainly many more attending than at those tiny classes. The Priests need to set up almost mandatory classes, with a little fun injected, just like other churches do, and then punch them at every Mass every day. We need to be educated in apologetics and then taught to go door to door in teams of 2, just like the JW's for that is the means by which their church grew so big so rapidly. RosLynn

I support this initiative. I can't tell you how my heart aches to hear more about our faith from our priest and not sugary sermons.
