The average Catholic in the pew is so grossly under-catechized that the matter has reached crisis proportions. Please help us!

We may not realise it, but many of the messages we imbibe through television, newspapers, music, etc., undermine our faith and our respect for the human person - principally through the portrayal of human sexuality as a consumer commodity. Most priests, on the other hand, seem reluctant to broach these subjects. We rarely - if ever - hear anything in the sermon that explains, defends or upholds the faith, especially in relation to the dignity of the human person. Consequently, almost all of the information we are getting about what it means to be human is coming from the culture of death; we hear next to nothing from the Church's sublime teachings on the beauty and wonder of humanity. If we could get just 10 minutes each week, that would be a good start.

We must first be evangelized in order to be catechized productively. I think like me, people are hungry for the truth and are tired of a watered down version of the Catholic faith!! How do we reach the 70% of lukewarm, non practicing Catholics in a powerful, dynamic way that will make them on fire for their faith? By giving them the truth and wanting to learn more about their Catholic faith. The biggest reason I hear why people either come back or become Catholic is the REAL PRESENCE of Jesus in the Eucharist!!! We are so blessed!!!

We all need to be catechized; priests and deacons are inspired by the Holy Spirit as to the topics of their homilies; we laity need to look for the message of the Word that God wants us to hear. We all need to learn how to listen.

I am a convert to the Catholic faith and came into the church in 1999, best event that has happened in my life. I had an excellent priest who catechized me extremely well, but we could all do with brushing up our faith and re-learning as we can forget some teachings so easily. In churches today I am surprised that so many people do not know even the basics of their faith, and don't realize how blessed they are to be a Catholic. I am all for learning especially Bible study which unfortunately at the moment we do not have at our church.
